Peripheral Neuropathy & Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral Neuropathy (PN) is a condition that affects the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord, often impacting the extremities such as the feet and hands. It can lead to a range of uncomfortable and debilitating symptoms, including pain, numbness, weakness, loss of sensation, and balance issues. In the United States, about 14% of adults aged 40 and older and 39% of adults aged 70 and older are affected by this condition.
Common causes of PN include diabetic neuropathy, a complication of diabetes, and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, a frequent side effect of cancer treatment. Other contributing factors may include alcohol abuse, vitamin deficiencies (such as B1, B6, B12), autoimmune disease, or physical injury.
The TCM Perspective on Peripheral Neuropathy
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we view Peripheral Neuropathy as a result of Qi blockage and blood stagnation. The progression typically starts with Qi deficiency, which, over time, leads to Qi blockage. If this blockage persists, it eventually affects the blood vessels, causing further issues like numbness, pain, and weakness in the affected areas. In more severe cases, the skin may become red, swollen, and even warm or hot due to inflammation.
From a TCM perspective:
- Liver is like a tree that disperses Qi throughout the body.
- Lung is the organ that regulates the flow of Qi across the entire body.
- Heart is viewed as the vital pump, ensuring the smooth flow of both blood and Qi throughout the system.
To effectively treat PN, we focus on moving Qi and blood to relieve blockages, while also strengthening the lung, liver, and heart to promote balance and healing. It is crucial for the heart energy to be strong, as it ensures the proper circulation of blood and Qi, helping to restore health and vitality.
What to Expect from Treatment
Using a combination of Balance Method Acupuncture, Tung’s Acupuncture, and Chinese herbal remedies, I aim to promote the smooth flow of Qi and blood to the affected areas, addressing the root causes of the condition. For optimal results, a sonogram report is recommended to identify specific areas of blood blockage, allowing for more precise acupuncture point selection.
